Carol Lee Garrett grew up on the beaches of Southern California, a long way from Pendergrass, Georgia where she sadly passed away on Thursday, February 18th at Northeast Medical Center in Gainesville, Georgia. Carol is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Robert (Bob) John Garrett. Carol and Bob graduated from Huntington Beach High School in 1959 and were married in the spring of 1961. Early in her career, she worked Tinkerbell’s toyshop at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Rounding out their family after being blessed with 3 boys, the couple adopted their fourth child, a daughter. Carol, Bob and their children moved east to St. Louis, Missouri and eventually to Lilburn, Georgia, where they settled in 1972. Raising four kids while Bob traveled often for work, Carol spent her days as a homemaker, chauffeur, den mother, soccer mom, drill team flag sewer, and booster club organizer. She had dozens of close friends, played tennis, and help run the altar guild at St. James Lutheran Church in Norcross, Georgia. In the summers she ran the neighborhood pool concession stand and served thousands of hotdogs for the swim meets at Beaver Hills subdivision. The Fourth of July parties were the highlight of the community, as were Christmas caroling and hot chocolate in December. Most importantly Carol became the chief encourager and disciplinarian to her children. She instilled in her them strong morals, to be respectful, and have compassion for others. In fact the Garrett home was never without pets as Carol often would find stray dogs & cats and give the animals a loving home. She was a volunteer at Gwinnett Medical Center, and for a while even enjoyed working as secretary for a local church as well as a cook in the local elementary school in Jackson County. She loved cultivating her rose garden. Eventually she and Bob retired to a little house in Pendergrass, Georgia. The one thing Carol loved more than anything though was to spend time with her 10 grandchildren. They called her Grammy, and her home was replete with coloring books and puzzles, and special treats like lemon drops. As the couple grew older, Carol cared for Bob until he finally succumbed to Parkinson’s disease in 2015. They were active members of The Lake Country Shakers Parkinson’s Support Group. She herself suffered with the chronic pain of rheumatoid arthritis for many years. In the end she was surrounded by her 4 children who loved her dearly. Carol Garrett was 74 years old. Her brother Allan White of Huntington Beach, California, her mother and father Eileen White Nix and Richard White of Westminster California preceded her in death. She is survived by her children and grandchildren; Andrew Garrett, Katie and Tori of Pendergrass; Dr. Michael and Jennifer Garrett, Madison, Mitchell, and Molly of Suwanee; Matthew and Therese Garrett, Grace, Emma, and Maggie of Atlanta; Shannon and James Lambert, Lucas and Ethan of Dacula; and finally her loving dog Ginger and her “Grey Kitty”. A farewell service with close friends and family is being planned, she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
