Claris McGalliard Ingersoll

Claris McGalliard Ingersoll, age 89, of Athens passed away Friday, September 16, 2016. She was a 1948 graduate from the University of Georgia with a Bachelors of  Arts in Journalism. Mrs. Ingersoll worked for several years with the Bergen Evening Record in Hackensack, N.J. However, her primary career, from which she retired in 1993 after more than 30 years, was as the well-loved and respected Librarian for the Landscape Architecture and Historic Preservation programs at the University of Georgia College of Environment + Design. She loved reading, gardening, hiking, bird watching, and stargazing. She will be remembered by friends and colleagues for her generous help and warm hospitality, including to the lost dogs and cats that found a home under her care. A private memorial will be held. Donations may be made in Mrs. Ingersoll’s name to the UGA Foundation, earmarked to the H.B. Owens Library Support Fund. Survivors include her son John H. Ingersoll, Jr. and wife Deborah of Athens; sister Lucille Rood of Lake City, Florida; granddaughters  Jamie and Kezia Ingersoll of Athens. She was preceded in death by parents, William and Lois McGalliard and daughter Suzanne Ingersoll.
