Born in, Siloam, Ga. He was the son of the late Paul and Ellie Maude Jones Phelps, Of Union Point, GA. He was a member of Wedgefield Baptist Church, Wedgefield, SC.
Fred Lewis Phelps diligently served his country for 26 years in the United States Air Force. Upon retirement from Shaw Air Force Base 9th HQ, he and his family made Sumter, SC their home. In his later years, Fred enjoyed sharing his homegrown blueberries with friends and family. He met many needs in the surrounding community, never wanting others to go in want.
Fred is survived by four daughters, Phyllis Dianne Phelps, of Carson City, NV, Mary Jane Yancey (Chris) of Travelers Rest, SC, Sandra Louise Wilson (Eddie) of Sumter, SC, Elizabeth Phelps Fulmer (Steve) of Hoschton, GA. Eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Two sisters also survive him, Sara M. Moon and A. Louise Moody.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his son Jerry Edsall Phelps and his siblings Ruby E. McKinley, Claude E. Phelps, W. Florence Phelps, Robert L. Phelps, Ellie Mae Finch, and Benjamin P. Phelps.
Graveside services will be conducted on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 by Pastor Paul Goff at the Sumter Cemetery, Sumter, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Wedgefield Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 265, Wedgefield, SC 29168. A loyal servant is now in the presence of his Master.
